Good Stuff Online

  • Bonobos - The Bonobo Conservation Initiative This organization works to preserve the endangered Bonobo species - that's a rare species of ape that lives only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. How does a conservation organization make its mission relevant and effective in a nation ravaged by war for 20-some years? By working within the context of Congolese culture, capitalizing on local wisdom, and providing alternative job opportunities (i.e. alternative to logging and bush-meat hunting) for individuals. In other words, it's an "everybody wins" approach. Learn more about their work, and about bonobos -- who walk upright, use tools, and can acquire written language -- at this site.
  • CSA's (that's' Community Supported Agriculture - read: how to get fresh, local, organic veggies and get involved in your community at the same time.) This site has general info on CSA's plus how to find one in your area.

Here's a link to my neighborhood CSA in Sunnyside, Queens, NYC. The page includes a video about CSA's that shows lots of pictures of my neighborhood and neighbors.

  • TED (that's Technology - Entertainment - Design) This site has tons and tons of 18-minute talks by great thinkers of our time, on every subject imaginable, which are inspiring and thought-provoking.
  • The Ethicurean. More food stuff: this is the only blog I read regularly - it's all about sustainable/organic/local/ and/or ethically raised food.
  • OpenSecrets.org This site tracks contributions to our politicians. They all owe something to somebody - inform yourself and help keep them honest.
  • This is a simple, wonderful fable on Jeff Bridges' (super-cool) website.
  • I believe that if everybody found their own way of cultivating compassion, the world would be a better place.
